Unusual
Horse Stories - Page 6
We had a contest for unusual horse stories-- people sent in the quirky things they've seen horses do. Below are the top entries we received! Horses are amazing animals and each and every one has their own personal identity, Although many people say we are simply giving them human qualities (personifiating) because we are blinded but their charm. Bozo aka Bonanzo is the local hero in my small village, he's the horse that caries all the disabled kids around on his back, yes i know there are many with this amazing ability but he is extra special with his ability to scratch like a dog. Yes you heard me right he sits on his rather large buttox, lifts his musscular leg and scratches behind his ear. This is no ceromonious occation as it is such a common occurence simply walk up adn scratch his ears and down he goes! I'd provide a picture, however as i and usually on him at the time i have not had the chance to stop him in the act to grab my camera. It goes without saying he would never do this with a disabled rider but i think he just likes being a clown for the children onlooking. -Jessica Ross
The most
unusual thing I have ever seen a horse do is get stuck in a bug
rubber feeding tire. It happened to my Belgian/QH when he was
just a yearling. We have fed out of tires forever and never had
trouble with them till that day. My mom's plan worked, Jack was just fine, but know one knows how he got stuck, but i guess thats why it was so unusual because we have know explanation to this happaning. So I guess you could call Jack one strange horse. But I love him anyway. - Shelby Ordynas
After riding for over seven years I’ve gotten to see some very interesting and sometimes scary things. The most puzzling happened nearly three years ago this summer. My instructor, Val, was driving when she came across a loose. Of course, being the horse lover she is, she stopped and caught him using a strap off a camera bag as a makeshift lead. Our area is a fairly close knit horse community, as most everyone in the area shows in the local circuit or rides in Blue and Grey Park, and at some point, nearly everyone had taken lessons, camp, boarded, or 4-H’d with Val. After settling the newly dubbed Snickers in the barn, she contacted other stables nearby, asking about a missing pinto pony stallion. None had and after several fruitless weeks of posting signs and looking around Snickers simply melted into the barn scene. We never did figure out Snicker’s past life. But he’s made himself an irresistible piece of the barn activity. Joining in with lessons and summer camps after me and several other riders at the barn got to train him and his pony pal, another splashy colored paint pony, Ricky. We took Snicker’s to the local shows, entering him in pony halter and cleaning up. Even with the attention he was getting there, no one claimed him. So Snicker’s is permanently here to stay, and with hopes that he’ll get trained to drive this coming summer, he’s got a full schedule ahead! -Savannah Byrne
A horse's diet could be described as hay, grass, and grain with a few variations here and there. Yet, for my friend Stacy's horse, Breeze, that only includes the main course. We were out trailriding at the CCTR, in Eminence,Mo, and stopped for lunch. The horses were cropping grass and I was eating a can of beef ravioli when Breeze walked up and started lipping the can. So I forked one out for him and he ate it off the fork. He ended up eating half of my lunch and after I literally pushed him away, he gave a satisfied burp. - Jordan Lavy . My horse is possibly the Harry Houidini of the horse world .One day as I was cleaning stalls I went outside to dump my wheelbarrow full of you know what and I saw him he was swimming across the lake that partly encloses his pasture. To understand why he did this you have to understand two things: one, across from his pasture was where we kept my two mares and two, he is a pride cut gelding who thinks he is a stud.Woopsy. As he proceeded to get out of the water and shake off I stood like an idiot with my mouth open I mean this is my gelding that barely crosses creeks much less swims lakes suprise suprise. Then as I was standing there he ran up to the mares and started chasing the mares from one end of the pasture to the pasture to the other. I quickly regained my senses and caught him but to this day I can't put him in the pasture, nor will he cross a creek. -kamie harrell
