Tail nicking is still practiced today in the Tennessee Walking Horse, American Saddlebred, and Morgan Horse communities. It is a medical procedure performed by a Vet that does NOT involve breaking the tail. It is done by making two tiny incisions on the underside of the tail. The horse still retains mobility of the tail, it just can't pin/clamp the tail down against the buttocks. The horse does NOT have to wear the set 24/7. The set is usually put on the day before, or the day of a show. If done properly by a licensed vet, the procedure has no adverse effects on the horse whatsoever.
