How to Make a Duct Tape Boot for an Abcess
by Katie Dixon www.normandyequestriancenter.com

Materials:
1 Roll of Duct Tape
Scissors

If you've ever dealt with an abcess you know the cardinal rule is to keep the
hoof clean ,clean, clean. Stalling a horse or turning it out in the
pasture can still lead to a wet or torn up wrap.Using duct tape can help
prolong the use of your wrap (follow vet's instructions on when to change each
wrap) by blocking out water and debris. Here is a simple procedure that will
save you time, struggle and duct tape.

Steps ( to be performed AFTER abcess area has been cleaned, treated and
wrapped):

1. Using a roll of duct tape and a flat, hard surface begin measuring out a 12"
long strip of duct tape vertically onto the surface.
2. Follow the same procedure except this time overlap half of the previous 12"
strip. Press FIRMLY so the tape will stick.
3. Do this until you have a 12" wide sheet of overlapping duct tape
4. You will now follow the same procedure except this time measure and overlap
the strips of duct tape horizontally so you are now working over top the
previous sheet. Do this until the sheet is 12" by 12" (Depending on the size of
the horse you are working with you may have to make the strips smaller in
length)
5. Gently peel the duct tape sheet off the surface starting at the top left
hand corner of the sheet.
6. Using a pair of scissors cut each corner about 4" diagonally into the
center. You should now have four flaps and a flat center.
7. Pick up the treated and wrapped hoof and firmly place the center of the duct
tape sheet onto the center of the hoof.
8. Fold each flap up and around the sides of the hoof forming a boot.
9. You know have a duct tape boot that will help reinforce your hoof wrap!
