Skid Boots
< Back to Horse Tack Articles

Skid boots are hind leg boots designed to protect the horse's fetlocks. They are common amongst reiners as they are required to stop hard on their hind end and slide. Without the protection that the skid boots provide the horse's fetlocks could be burned as he comes to a sliding stop. Skid boots are also popular amounts speed event horses such as barrel racers and calf ropers.

Barrel horses need the protection of the skid boots because when the slide around the barrel their fetlocks are subject to being burned, the same is true of calf roping horses when they stop hard to catch the calf. Some skid boots just cover the fetlock area while others cover and protect the cannon bone as well. Which skid boot is best is a matter of personal preference. Some riders feel that the smaller skid boots do not proved enough support and protections while others feel that the larger boots too heavy and bulky.
