Wild Horse Sales Suspended!
I am a member of AWHP's
mailing list and receive their updates. On 4/25, I received two
updates notifying that wild horse sales have been suspended indefinately
by the Secretary of the Interior's office. This is a small victory,
but please keep writing, emailing, and calling your legislators!
You can find sample letters & facts at AWPH's
website.
Dear wild horse supporters:
We finally have some
good news to report: the Secretary of the Interior's office has
suspended indefinitely all sales of wild horses under the Burns
Amendment. More information to come.
On behalf of the
horses, thank you for your unwavering support on this issue. This
goes to show that a sustained public outcry can make a difference.
Let’s keep up the good fight, as this is by no means over.
H.R. 297 and S. 576 still need your voice, to ensure that the
Burns Amendment be reversed for good.
Have a great day,

The second alert goes in
to more detail:
A Native American
tribe, the Rosebud Sioux Tribe of South Dakota, who had purchased
200 animals from the BLM, exchanged these older animals with younger
animals with a horse dealer, whose intent was to send them directly
to slaughter. Of the two loads (a total of 87) that were slated
to be shipped to the slaughter plant in DeKalb, Illinois, only
one (containing 51 animals) actually arrived at the plant. Unfortunately,
35 of those animals were slaughtered before BLM could intervene.
The remaining animals from the first load are currently being
held safely at the DeKalb plant, and the second load of animals
is being held safely at the horse dealer's. Law enforcement has
been involved, and BLM will be buying back all of the remaining
horses. BLM has spoken to the media so it is likely we will see
this on the nightly news tonight. The Department will be making
a formal statement sometime tomorrow.
Please contact the
media, local and national, to express your outrage at the slaughter
of yet more of our wild horses. They will not be safe until the
Burns Amendment has been reversed.
On behalf of the
horses, thank you for your continued support.
